After living in their beautiful home nestled in bushland in the hills of Perth for 10 years, Ines and Andrew were still entertaining on paving under shade sails tied to the gum trees. Their planned outdoor entertainment area had to tick lots of boxes, including matching the style of the house, capturing the winter sun while shading the house in summer, matching the bushland setting, and allowing light all year round to reach into the house. And of course it had to improve, not detract, from the magnificent view.
On top of that Ines wanted the area to be able to comfortably fit an array of outdoor furniture, while Andrew said he’d like a ‘bar shelf’ on the top of the balustrade and a ‘foot rest’ along the base to accommodate the boys. This really was the epitome of entertaining and relaxing!
The first step was to remove all the old paving and 20cubic metres of soil. The soil was relocated to other areas of the block. After designing the extension, termite resistant structures of steel bearers and stirrups were installed due to the rural bush setting, and the construction process began. The deck needed to be elevated off the ground enough to allow for air flow to minimise moisture under the structure.
The use of 135mm wide Jarrah boards was used for the 125sq m feature deck, while bush poles and hardwood rafters were used to construct the feature roof. The northern end of the roof gable was left open to allow winter light in while the southern end was closed to stop the winter weather penetrating the area. Polycarbonate was used in sections in the roofing to retain the light to the house.
Andrew got his ‘balustrade bar’, while Ines was able to add all the decorative and furniture pieces to bring the outdoor living and entertaining area to life.
WA Timber Decking supplied the design, sight works, deck, balustrade, roof, and all the sealing of the timbers.
